Finishing At The Rim: What To Teach And How To Teach

Offensive basketball always has been and always will be about attacking the basket and playing inside-out. For this inside-out method to be effective, players must develop their ability to finish at the basket.

The finishes that we teach with our players are:

1. Outside Reach Finish

2. Inside Reach Finish

3. Reverse Finish

4. Power Finish

5. Step-Thru

6. Baby Jumper

The first three finishes are ones that the player will execute in a "big advantage" situation. A big advantage occurs when the ball handler beat their defender and has space to use. The last three finishes are ones that the player will execute in a "small-advantage" situation. A small advantage is when the offensive player is only slightly by their defender and will need to finish through contact or create more space.

We want to keep things simple for our player, and as such we do not give them a million moves to learn. Additionally, so much of finishing at the basket is about players finding solutions based on how they are being guarded, and we feel that these 6 finishes provide a foundational base which they can branch off of.

Big Advantage Finishes:

Some key teaching points when executing the big advantage finishes are:

  1. Ball pickup - collect the ball without bringing it to the inside of your body

  2. One foot take-off - finish fast and smooth

  3. Body on, ball away - rotate your shooting shoulder towards the rim, placing your body between the defender and the ball

  4. Eyes on the target all the way through the finish

  5. Finish high off the glass if possible

  1. Ball pickup - collect the ball without bringing it to the inside of your body

  2. Balanced 2 foot stop: can be a "one-count" or outside-inside stride stop

  3. Body on, ball away - non shooting shoulder is into the defense to shield the ball

  4. Eyes on the target all the way through the finish

  5. Finish high off the glass if possible
