Definition Of Culture
"Disciplined attitude and action done out of DESIRE to align" - Dave Brandt
Culture Creation Process:
Step 1: Compelling Vision
What is it that you are asking people to align their attitudes and actions towards? What is it that you are trying to create?
Our vision: “To be the best place in the country to play college basketball. We will be the team that everyone wants to be on and no one wants to play against.”
Step 2: Prepare The Soil
The minute the recruiting process starts, so does culture creation. Be upfront with who you are, what the program is like, and what the expectations are. Fit comes first. Over communicate both the good and the bad.
Step 3: Teach It
Have a formal process for teaching your culture and expectations to the people in your program. This is done through formal teaching, handouts, and videos.
Step 4: Model It
Your example is paramount: you cannot give away what you do not possess.
Step 5: Integrate It
Experience is often the best teacher. Create rituals and routines in your program where your values come to life and are demonstrated in action.
Step 6: Confront Disconnect
The natural human tendency is to drift towards ease. The coach must be willing to confront disconnect time and time again.
Step 7: Repeat x1000
There is no finish line for creating your culture. Do not grow weary.
